I'm not a mastering-only engineer, I do a lot of tracking and mixing too.

"don't most mastering-only engineers use things like WaveLab almost exclusively? I mean, especially Mixbus is so full of "character", doesnt it imprint the end master files a whole lot?" I am digging the sound, nothing comes close or gets me there as easily. (03-02-2017, 08:54 PM)Mixing The Band Wrote: "This is a standard use here" Great to hear that. I use WL just to finalise, limiting, chain song, Code. (03-02-2017, 05:51 PM)Bassface Wrote: don't most mastering-only engineers use things like WaveLab almost exclusively? Sometimes I master in Izotope Ozone standalone, sometimes I import the tracks into Pro Tools and master there with plugins, sometimes I just use Har-Bal, it depends. This may become my preferred method for mastering, I really love the rich sound and creamy smoothness Mixbus imparts. Mixbus 32C, Debian Bullseye/KDE, EVE SC205 + ADAM Sub 8 monitors, Soundcraft Compact 4, M-Audio 2496, i5 6500, 16GB RAM, WD Blue SSD 1TB, 48' LG OLED, other stuff. The client said the mixes sound "wonderful". I didn't use any channel or bus dynamics for this, just the final limiter in Ozone, which was hardly even active, because it was an acoustic record that did not need to be "pushed".

The channel EQ and filters were helpful, and I dialed in a bit more saturation on the buses and master. I inserted Ozone on all the tracks so I could perform minor corrections with Mid/Side EQ and multiband compressor, and level matched the mixes with the channel trim control. Immediately, I noticed all of the songs sounded better, a bit more lifelike after mixing in Pro Tools, without adding any plugins. So I imported the mixes, each on it's own track, and assigned each to it's own Mixbus. I recently picked up Mixbus32c, and thought it would be a great move to try to master in Mixbus.

Some of the people I know have Reaper as primary daw while they simultaneously connect Mixbus and Reaper with Reapers built-in Asio driver Rearoute and then back to Reaper. Naturally mixes sound better or worse depending on how you utilize it. Available are: Record enable Channel monitoring settings Channel input Polarity inversion - also check out the polarity optimizer Solo isolate - if a channel is set to ‘solo isolate’ then it is not muted when another channel is solod. On buses, saturation tends to be aggressive than on master. I have a number of ways I set up a session for mastering. Settings (switcher) Switcher The top bar above the insert panel exposes the settings for the channel.
